Cape Breton Surgeons on a Mission

We owe it to the developing world to give back,"We've won the birth lottery; we have privileges that so many are denied. We have to give back and it is the duty of every Canadian to do so."
About
We are the Cape Breton International Surgical Volunteer Team. Our team was developed September 2013, and we are a non profit organization with an elected board of officers. Our team is comprised of surgeons, anesthesists, and nurses. Since our development we have completed 2 surgical missions to Guatemala, the first mission was for one week and the second was for two weeks. The first mission we did 70 surgeries: hernia repairs, laparoscopic cholecystectomies, removal of lipomas and benign tumors. The second mission was one week of adult surgeries and one week pediatric surgeries and a total of 90 surgeries were completed.
We cover the cost of transportation for our patients and their families from their village to Guatemala City, lodging and meals. We pay for our transportation to and from the hospital, our lodgings in Guatemala, the rental of the hospital, clinic staff, translators, and other hospital personnel. We purchase medication, and medical supplies in Canada and also in Guatemala. The team covers their own airfare and hotels in North America.
The money we use to pay for all the costs associated with the mission comes from monetary donations from people in our community, and our fundraising events. We have had bake sales, sold tickets on items, have held concerts and auctions, just to name a few of our endeavours.
Next Mission
Our next surgical mission will be February 2016 to Guatemala City. This will be a week long mission, and our expectations are to do between 60 to 70 surgeries during that week.
All monies for the surgical mission is raised through fundraising efforts and monetary donations from people in our community.
